Problems That Can Arise Precisely Because Reasoning Models Have Reasoning Abilities

Based on observations in some cases, I examined specific behaviors seen in reasoning models. This suggests the possibility of aspects that “occur precisely because they have reasoning abilities.”

Possible factors include the following points:

1. Overconfidence in Internal Knowledge

Models with higher reasoning abilities may tend to judge that they can solve problems using only internal knowledge without using external tools (such as search), and omit verification. It is conceivable that because they have the ability, the judgment that “I can understand without looking it up” is more likely to occur.

2. Optimization of Thought Costs

Since the reasoning process incurs computational costs, models may be adjusted to learn the “minimum thinking steps to reach the correct answer.” As a result, even when confidence is low, cases are observed where thinking is terminated early and verification is omitted.

3. Over-generalization

Precisely because they have undergone complex reasoning training, a bias can occur where they judge “this is the same as a problem I solved before” the moment they see a similar pattern, and skip individual verification.

This suggests a paradoxical phenomenon where, because of their high ability, they self-judge that “there is no need to look it up” and end up cutting corners.
